The New York Yankees, the prestigious franchise of Major League Baseball (MLB), has shed its pride. They’ve broken a tradition that’s been in place for 120 years, since 1903. They’ve decided to put ads on their iconic striped uniforms.
The New York Yankees recently announced on social media that they will wear their first advertisements on their away game against Kansas City on April 21. It is said that the sponsor logos will not be placed on the chest or back like the uniforms of Korean baseball teams, but in the form of a patch on the shoulder.
In exchange for breaking with Yankees tradition, New York-based property and casualty insurer Starr Insurance will pay $25 million a year in sponsorship fees through 2031.
According to a release from the Yankees, Starr Insurance will not wear a logo, but rather a patch with just the words “Starr Insurance,” and the location of the patch will vary from player to player. It’s white on black.
Baseball rules require all players to wear the same uniform, but the patch is placed differently for each player, meaning some players wear it on their left shoulder while others wear it on their right.
The Yankees’ decision to break with tradition and wear sponsors brings the number of major league teams with advertised jerseys to 13. The first team to do so was the San Diego Padres, who created their first advertised jerseys in April.
MLB broke with tradition and changed the rules last year to allow advertisements on jerseys. The San Diego Padres were the first to do so in April, followed by the Boston Red Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Fans have reacted by blaming the Yankees. “I’ve been a Yankees fan for 50 years and this is terrible news,” the Yankees website said.온라인바카라
“Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and George Steinbrenner must be turning in their graves,” Fox Sports reported.
The Yankees, in particular, are one of the more traditional teams in Major League Baseball. They still wear pinstriped uniforms that haven’t changed in over 100 years. Players are not allowed to wear goatees. This is all in keeping with tradition.
Of course, the Yankees have worn other uniforms in the past. In 2012, they wore their 1912 uniforms to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Fenway Park in Boston.
They’ve also worn old jerseys for major league-wide Players’ Weekend in 2018 and 2019, and at the Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, Iowa, in 2021.
With the Yankees breaking with tradition by advertising on their uniforms, the Detroit Tigers are the only team that has never changed their uniforms since their inception.
